Among The 7: Post 4: At the Mouth of the Well of the Itza

Image
You have probably heard about the Chichen Itza, between the tropical and dangerous jungles of the Yucatan Peninsula in what is present day Mexico. But did you know that it isn’t a pyramid, but rather a classical Mesoamerican ancient and Mayan metropolis (Phew, that was long).   Actually, the pyramid is actually called the ‘El Castillo’ which is the Spanish word for ‘the castle’. This Pyramid is dedicated to the Serpent God (Hint:-We mentioned it in our dragon post) ‘ Kukulkan’ who is a Mesoamerican Deity in Mayan and Aztec(s call him Quetzalcoatl ) pantheons. The City’s main layout is believed to have developed between 700 AD and 900 AD. During the late Classical period, the city reached its highest(not the height of the people, but the height of its dominance politically). It was, toward the end of the Late Classic and into the early part of the Terminal Classic that the site became a major regional capital, centralizing and dominating political, sociocultural, economic, and ide...

The Vighnaharta's Birthday

Image
We are going to take a break from our series today to tell you about this special day in India (We live in India). As per historical records, the great Maratha leader Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaja initiated Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in Maharashtra to promote the spirit of nationalism. It would later be carried on by the Peshwas(prime ministers of the Maratha empire).  Till now it was only a private matter but, the Freedom Fighter Lokma Nya Tilak encouraged people to put up big Pandals and come out in public in mass numbers which were against the policy of the British. Hence, symbolizing a freedom movement. The oldest Ganesh temple in India is the Ranthambore Ganesh Temple. It is believed that Lord Krishna and his wife Rukmini sought blessings from this temple during their wedding. Situated in the forests, in the 1000 year old Ranthambore Fort it is much revered by the locals and tourists Ganesh is a deity in Hinduism who is represented with an elephant head symbolizing knowledge,...

Among The 7: Post 3: The Mountain Citadel

Image
You may have heard about our past posts but, you wouldn’t have heard about Machu Picchu before.  About 7000 feet above sea level, Sapa Inca Pachacuti, who was an Incan Emperor, is believed to have built the Citadel during the mid-1400s. It was built by men pushing rocks towards the peak without the use of wheels. Also the rocks were cut without a mortar.  The Mountain Citadel was used to home the king and other important people of the Empire. Even their peasants stayed in the premises of the Citadel.   During the 1500s, the Spanish led by their general Pizzaro conquered the Incan empire by bringing it to an end but, Machu Picchu was never seen again by the human race again until the year 1911. The residents took with them their most valuable belongings and destroyed Inca trails connecting Machu Picchu with the rest of the empire. Machu Picchu is a protected area and a World Heritage Site since 1983. No one can live inside the citadel. However, during your visit, you will ...

Among The 7: Post 2: The White Mausoleum

When an Indian hears the phrase ‘7 Wonders of the World’, only one thing pops up in his/her head is The Majestic Symbol of Love. You now probably know what we are going to talk about in the second post of Among the 7. The majestic Taj Mahal was built between 1631 and 1648 under orders of The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. It was made for his love towards his second wife, Mumtaz Mahal. He wanted to build a gift for his favorite wife (Mumtaz Mahal if you didn’t already know) but it was later turned into her tomb.  The tomb was originally made to be named as 'Roza-e-Munavvara' which means Unique Building, but was then renamed by Shah Jahan as Taj Mahal as a loving tribute to his wife for whom his love surpassed all belief. Inside the Taj Mahal, the cenotaphs honoring Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan are enclosed in an eight-sided chamber ornamented with Pietra Dura (an inlay with semi-precious stones) and a marble lattice screen. But the gorgeous monuments are just for show: The real Sarco...

Among The 7: Post 1: The Cultural Defense

Image
You may know a lot about defenses but when it comes to China it has to be the Great Wall of China. We are going to talk about this in the first post of Among The 7.  But it was not a single unified wall, rather small structures built by warring states to keep themselves protected from each other and Northern Mongolian raiders. After the Emperor Qin Shi Huang unified all of them and proclaimed himself the first emperor of the new unified China in the year 220 BCE. He started to build and connect the structures built by his predecessors to protect his northern border .  Now to build this wall, he needed a huge amount of labor. He started forcing peasants, soldiers and criminals who were imprisoned to build the defensive wall. The wall is made of cement, rocks, bricks, and dirt It is said that as many as 400,000 people died during the wall's construction; many of these workers were buried within the wall itself. This wall took about 20 years to build. This wall was weak and not ...

The Second One Wins This Time

When we ask you to think about Egypt, what do you picture in your mind? A desert? The Sphinx? The Nile River? Camels? Nope. You usually think about the pyramids. There are so many pyramids in Giza, but The Great Pyramid of Giza is the best and the largest of them all. The second Pharaoh of the fourth dynasty and old kingdom, Khnum-Khufu (son of Sneferu), built the most famous pyramid till date. The Great Pyramid of Giza was also the second pyramid to be built. Khufu built only one pyramid. But his successors and his father built a lot more  We assume that the other pyramids were not as big because the other Pharaohs had respect towards the son of Sneferu and wanted their pyramids to be smaller than Khufu’s.  We just found out that the other pyramids are smaller because The Great Pyramid of Giza was the second pyramid to be stable. The average weight of the 3d triangle is 5,750,000 Tons . The pyramid's base covered over 13 acres and its sides rose at an angle of 51 degrees and ...

The Old Legendary Myth

Image
When somebody says the word ‘Dragon’ we mostly think about western presentations of dragons like “Hydra”. The word dragon translates to ‘flying lizard’ in Chinese. A dragon is a large serpent that is winged, horned, four-legged and can breath fire. The idea of it has been here since the high middle ages.  Dragons are split into two interpretations . The ones who want to destroy the world and the ones that want to nurture the world.  In ancient China, dragons are worshipped, shown to be lucky and are associated with the imperial house and knowledgeable(or) noble people. But in ancient Greece and Medieval Europe, slaying a dragon gives you a lot of respect. Ophidiophobia, the fear of snakes, is present in every human being. Even if you are cool with snakes, you can feel goosebumps when it slithers on your skin. Some people think that snakes are descendants of the mythological legend. Some of us also say that ...

The Unknown Cretaceous King of India

When you talk about dinosaurs, you usually think about the carnivore T-rex. But have you heard about the Indian carnivore Rajasaurus Narmadensis. Let's discuss this big lizard in today’s post. There are many of these creatures that were Indian in origin. The Rajasaurus is one of them. The dinosaur is said to be 6.6 meters in length, 2.4 meters in height and 4 METRIC TONNES in weight. A paleontologist, Suresh Srivastava from Jaipur discovered the dinosaur in 1983, from the fossil graveyard at Rahioli, in the Kheda district of Gujarat. The creature sports a peculiar crest hence giving it the name ‘Rajasaurus’ which means ‘Royal-lizard’.  It hunted small sauropods (This term refers  to herbivorous dinosaurs with awkwardly long necks and tails). Some experts tell us that the Rajasaurus may have had other herbivores for lunch as well.  Now let's talk about our opinions.  We feel that this late cretaceous (period the dinosaur lived in) reptilian gives the country of India ...

The Aftermath

Mother Earth is getting destroyed because of us humans. We are causing Earth to get warmer every day and making our surroundings more dangerous for the next generation. Pollution is the introduction of harmful materials into the environment. These materials are called pollutants.   Pollutants can be natural, such as volcanic ash. They can also be created by human activity, such as trash or runoff produced by factories. Pollutants damage the quality of air, water, and land.  As of now we have been telling you points copied from the internet(with a little editing of course). In the next part of this article we will be talking about our thoughts and opinions.  In the future, the costal cities all over the world will go under the sea due to the melting ice caps in the Antarctic and Artic Oceans. Polar bears, Penguins and other animals that live in the poles are losing their habitats even today. This is caused by global warming.  8 million people died due to air...
