Among The 7: Post 1: The Cultural Defense

You may know a lot about defenses but when it comes to China it has to be the Great Wall of China. We are going to talk about this in the first post of Among The 7.

But it was not a single unified wall, rather small structures built by warring states to keep themselves protected from each other and Northern Mongolian raiders.

After the Emperor Qin Shi Huang unified all of them and proclaimed himself the first emperor of the new unified China in the year 220 BCE. He started to build and connect the structures built by his predecessors to protect his northern border .

Now to build this wall, he needed a huge amount of labor. He started forcing peasants, soldiers and criminals who were imprisoned to build the defensive wall. The wall is made of cement, rocks, bricks, and dirt

It is said that as many as 400,000 people died during the wall's construction; many of these workers were buried within the wall itself. This wall took about 20 years to build.

This wall was weak and not invincible. Genghis Khan and his grandson,  Kublai Khan broke and made their way through the wall.

The Ming dynasty (1368 CE - 1644 CE) took over the whole of China. They needed the wall to keep them safe from their northern neighbors.

The Ming made watchtowers every few miles and built the wall with bricks. This made the wall stronger. Fires were used to alert other watchtowers and also used to alert the army.

After the Ming were conquered by the Qing in 1644 CE and there was no need for the wall. It was used for its materials.

At the time of The World Wars, China used the wall as defense against Japan.

We have some opinions to share with you.

The Great wall of China is a very strong wall as of today. Qin Shi Huang made a wise decision to build the wall. But he decided to build the wall with the wrong materials.

Qin Shi Huang was also very brutal and evil because he forced people to build the wall at the cost of their deaths and also killed his own associates when they didn't agree with him.

We thank you for reading our Great long post on the Great wall of China.
