Among The 7: Post 4: At the Mouth of the Well of the Itza
Actually, the pyramid is actually called the ‘El Castillo’ which is the Spanish word for ‘the castle’. This Pyramid is dedicated to the Serpent God (Hint:-We mentioned it in our dragon post) ‘Kukulkan’ who is a Mesoamerican Deity in Mayan and Aztec(s call him Quetzalcoatl) pantheons.
The City’s main layout is believed to have developed between 700 AD and 900 AD. During the late Classical period, the city reached its highest(not the height of the people, but the height of its dominance politically). It was, toward the end of the Late Classic and into the early part of the Terminal Classic that the site became a major regional capital, centralizing and dominating political, sociocultural, economic, and ideological life in the northern Maya lowlands. The ascension of Chichen Itza roughly correlates with the decline and fragmentation of the major centers of the southern Maya lowlands.
As Chichen Itza rose to prominence, the cities of Yaxuna (to the south) and Coba (to the east) were declining. These two cities were mutual allies, with Yaxuna dependent upon Coba. At some point in the 10th century, Coba lost a significant portion of its territory (isolating Yaxuna). Chichen Itza may have directly contributed to the collapse of both cities.
Unlike other cities in the Mesoamerican world (Pillaged and plundered by the Spanish during the so called ‘Renaissance’), Chichen itza’s decline is not well understood or documented. So, it is believed the city didn’t meet an end with ‘blood & fire’ unlike its Mesoamerican siblings(don’t ask us about who were their Parents and the family tree they followed).
It is believed (although we don’t) that the main reason is due to the decline of the city of it’s sister city ‘Tula’, or due to some complex gradual migration so historians may never be able to know about it’s collapse(Unless we convince Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos to invest in time travel).
It has been a long post today. So we will be giving some fun opinions (did i say opinions? Sorry it is baseless theories).
We think that the people of Chichen Itza or the Mayan people still exist to this day and they are waiting to take back their city, which is a world wonder now.
