Among The 7: Post 2: The White Mausoleum
When an Indian hears the phrase ‘7 Wonders of the World’, only one thing pops up in his/her head is The Majestic Symbol of Love. You now probably know what we are going to talk about in the second post of Among the 7.
The majestic Taj Mahal was built between 1631 and 1648 under orders of The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. It was made for his love towards his second wife, Mumtaz Mahal. He wanted to build a gift for his favorite wife (Mumtaz Mahal if you didn’t already know) but it was later turned into her tomb.
The tomb was originally made to be named as 'Roza-e-Munavvara' which means Unique Building, but was then renamed by Shah Jahan as Taj Mahal as a loving tribute to his wife for whom his love surpassed all belief.
Inside the Taj Mahal, the cenotaphs honoring Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan are enclosed in an eight-sided chamber ornamented with Pietra Dura (an inlay with semi-precious stones) and a marble lattice screen. But the gorgeous monuments are just for show: The real Sarcophagi are in a quiet room below, at garden level(wish I had one).
Shah Jahan wanted a clone of the Taj Mahal, but made in black. It was to be built behind the white mausoleum. If you go to visit the Taj Mahal today you would find black bricks laid out. It wasn’t finished because he died before they could go any further. It was decided for his corpse to lay in the Taj Mahal along with his wife which you can still visit today.
Now for the opinions you have all been waiting for (drum roll please)….
Our personal opinions (more like baseless theories) is that Shah Jahan built this monument not as a symbol of love but rather as a symbol to save his relationship with his wife.
Also, this monument would have just been a waste of time. If he really wanted to show love he would have tried to spend more time with Mumtaz rather than spend more time building something for her, unless his wife requested it.
