Myths and Legends: Ep1: The Origin of the Elephant God

FINALLY!!!! The first post of the Myths and Legends Series is here. Yea we changed the name… And also on the original post.

Parvati has a bath everyday, like everyone else (or do you?). She was sick of her husband, Lord Shiva, coming to the bathing place (researched a lot and could not find the actual name of the place). So, she asked Nandhi to make sure no one (Even Shiva himself) comes inside the bathing place when Parvati was bathing.

But, when Shiva came to meet Parvati, Nandhi let Shiva go in without even asking Parvati. Parvati was enraged when she realized that Nandhi let Shiva inside, even though Parvati ordered him to stop this.

She demanded that Shiva leave the bathing place. He did oblige. After her bath, Parvati made her first child with turmeric powder she used for her bath and made a little boy who would only listen to her.

The next day, Parvati told Ganesh to stop anyone who tries to come into the bathing area when she is in there. Long story short, Shiva beheaded Ganesh with his trident.

Parvati came out and saw her son dead. She started crying and told Shiva that Ganesh was her’s and Shiva’s son. Shiva then orders his soldiers to find and bring the head of the first living thing they see that was facing north and sleeping peacefully.

The only living thing that met the requirements was an elephant. Ganesh’s head was replaced and he became the legendary elephant god.

Time for the main part of this series… Opinions

Our opinion is we should copy paste the metaphorical meaning in our lives.

Also this story gives us hope when we have bad luck or when bad things happen to us.

Last but not least, was it really necessary to put an elephant head for a human? Like, why were the requirements sooo exact? But, I guess that the elephant head is what makes Ganesh, well, Ganesh.

The metaphorical meaning of this story is that the dirt represents blindness and ignorance. When it comes in contact with the Shiva tattva ( element in sanskrit), it first doesn’t recognise it but later it does and the ignorance is replaced with wisdom and knowledge.
