Imagine that you are flying for a sporting event in another city. You feel some turbulence, but you do not think of it as danger because it is very common. But, then you feel the plane shaking violently. The plane falls to the ground. You wake up to see that you are still alive with some of your friends. You look around to see that there is no vegetation nor any wildlife. It is only a matter of time before you and your friends consider eating the pilot.

It is October 12th, 1972, a rugby team from Montevideo, Uruguay are getting ready to leave for Santiago, Chile with some of their family members, supporters and crew members. They had chosen their cheapest option because there were about 45 members and other options were too expensive.

There was a terrible storm in the Andes, so they stopped at Mendoza, Argentina.

The pilots informed the passengers that they could not take the direct route because the flight was too weak to fly over the peaks. So, they were taking a diversion around the mountains to reach their destination.

The next day, the passengers got onto the plane after a quick game of rugby. Here is where it gets intense.

The pilots misjudged the ETA and conveyed to the air traffic controller that the plane would reach Santiago in 1 minute. Actually, the plane was 11 minutes away from the destination.

The crew lowered the flight preparing to land, but was face to face with a huge mountain. The pilots tried to lift up the flight over the mountain, but alas, the tail of the flight broke off after hitting the peak.

Some of the passengers who were at the back of the plane were ejected through the back. But the people at the front survived. The remains of the plane hits the ground and slides down a mountain. Thankfully it does not hit any rocky outposts or boulders.

Out of the 45 passengers who boarded the plane, 12 died immediately after the collision.

The first night was -22 degrees fahrenheit. The survivors blocked off the opening with luggage. They also thought that this would be their last night here. But that was far from the truth.

The problem was that the plane was white and would camouflage in the snow. The rescue helicopters would have a hard time spotting the plane.

Five more people died that night.

One of the players, Nando Parrado was in a coma and he did not know that his mother had died and his sister was on the way to heaven too. Both were on the flight because Nando was told that he could use the empty seats for free.

On the 14th, the injured are attended to. The co-pilot was found under debris, but still alive. He hands the other survivors his handgun and asks them to take his life. The survivors did not pull the trigger and the co-pilot was dead shortly later.

To be Continued… Tune in next week.

The latter part of this incident will be in the next episode along with our opinions on this subject. Until then, have some more fun and see you later.
