Myths and Legends: Ep 2 : Pandora's Jar not Pandora's Box

You all might have heard the phrase “Pandora’s box” it means something that creates new problems. Before we dive into the story of Pandora we have to first make it clear it was not a box but a jar(Hesiod used the word pithos which in Greek means jar), it was probably mis-translated in the 16th century . The story of Pandora’s Box is fascinating and was used by the ancient Greeks to tell about the problems of man. There are many versions to the myth but the most common one is that she was crafted by the gods as a form of punishment to man.

As man was the greatest of all the creatures ever created and had the mind to reason, the Gods demanded that man make them a sacrifice. So Prometheus helped mankind prepare a sacrifice. Prometheus got them an ox and asked them to cut it into two separate parts, the first one being the stomach and the second were the limbs(bones). Then he asked them to cover the stomach with hides and the disgusting entrails and the limbs(bones) with fat. When Zeus was asked to choose between the two he chose the limbs(because it was covered with fat and he couldn’t see what was beneath it), but when he took a closer look he saw that he was tricked.

Zeus summoned Prometheus at once. Zeus punished Prometheus by chaining him to a mountain in the caucasus and a eaglewould come every day to Prometheus and eat his liver. The liver would grow the next day.

Zeus was not done yet. He also wanted to punish the humans and so, he commanded the other gods to create a beautiful and curious mortal woman. She was given the name Pandora. Zeus sent her to Earth Pandora and told her to go to  Epimetheus, who was astonished by her beauty so  he let her into his house and got married. Pandora moved to Epimetheus’ house and enjoyed life as a happy couple. Pandora found a clay jar that she asked her husband about. He warned her not to open the jar, but Pandora's curiosity got the better of her.

One day, when Epimetheus wasn’t home, Pandora opened the jar. She saw as evil spirits escaped and immediately closed the jar, leaving one spirit inside ‘hope’.

At last but certainly not the least, our opinions are here!

Zeus is probably the most evil god there is. Also, curiosity kills the cat. And hope is always trapped.

We know it has been a long time since our last post. Rohan, one of the Number 3 Boys, had to go to a hostel. We were upset and wanted to take a break. The break has gone too long so Ishan and I (Aarav) are going to continue to post. Rohan will be part of a few posts when he can join us online. Thank you for reading and goodbye.
